North Academic Center Cafeteria Improvement Memo

Subject: NAC cafeteria seating

Date: February 1, 2020

Purpose:

My goal in this message to you is to bring to your attention to an issue that is about the lack of seating in the North Academic Center cafeteria. I would like to offer some insight and possible solution.

Summary:

The lack of seating in the North Academic Center cafeteria especially from the times between 10:30am and 1:30pm the NAC cafeteria is very crowded. During this time many high schoolers and college students from on campus come there to eat there, so often I see people walk in to search for a table to eat at however, leave soon after because they can’t find a place to eat.

Discussion:

This is a problem because when a spot to eat can’t be found in the NAC cafeteria, many have to go have to go elsewhere and most of the other building’s cafes are full because the high schoolers and college students are taking up all the space in the NAC so people eat elsewhere. An alternative to this is to eat outside, however during certain times of the year the weather in the city can be a little too extreme such as in the winter and summer so eating outside is uncomfortable.

Another problem this creates is that it discourages man students from buying food from the cafeteria would lead to a decline in profit from the vendors at the NAC cafeteria. This affects all those who spend time on campus, because the high schoolers eat at the NAC cafeteria so other CCNY students eat at other places on campus making those other places full and crowded.

Recommendation:

Though this issue may not seem extremely important, this is an issue that affects almost everyone at campus. One solution to this problem is to give the high schoolers their own separate dining facilities. The facilities would be in Shepard or Compton hall where some of the empty less used classrooms could be repurposed or used as a place to eat. This would take about a couple weeks to complete.

Another solution is to add more tables and chairs to the cafeteria and possibly expand out of the cafeteria for space to sit and eat. This wouldn’t require too much time maybe a couple days at most to move the vending machines to another location and set up more tables and chairs outside the NAC cafeteria. Hopefully, we can meet soon to further discuss the specifics and come up with a plan. I can be contacted at macun0@citymail.cuny.edu and thank you it is much appreciated.
